Russell Phillips
Artist statement:
Historically, exploration and discovery have walked hand in hand with creating a record, whether by diary or sketches, as a means to share an experience. With the advent of photography a tool was introduced, that holds true even today, as a means to share the visual discovery of ones observations.
Through a mutual friend, I was recommended to Jonathan Boyer, to document the Power House interior prior its extraction. What followed was thirteen days to urgently capture this turn of the century treasure.
These images represent both exploration and discovery of a slice in time where power was visually inherent in the massive scale of furnaces and generators surrounded by the artifacts of those who serviced and operated them. These photographs reveal the timeless limbo of this era when endless power and energy seemed the answer to our dreams.
